Matti Caspi Confession
Dalia Mevorach, Dani Dothan.
Matti Caspi, one of the greatest Israeli musicians, reveals a lifetime of experiences, from a gifted child, a polio survivor, in a loveless family on a kibbutz in the 1950s, through the days of stardom in an army band, massive hits, honor, and money, followed by an endless downward spiral of family, financial, and media complications, leading to his escape from the country and the construction of a new identity in America, which included seeking refuge with Jehovah witnesses and starting a new family despite still being married. The Israeli media pursued him to America, and the image of the kibbutznik who celebrated his wedding with Jehovah witnesses made newspaper headlines. The Israelis in California, who were Matti’s source of income, severed contact, and Matti was forced to return to Israel and embark on a long and painful process of rehabilitation to reclaim his place in the spotlight. Matti tells his life story as a confession, sitting in front of the camera and allowing the defensive walls to fall. The film moves between the opposing dimensions of the creator and the individual, revealing the secrets behind the characteristic frozen expression. The Israeli soundtrack, which is Matti’s songs, takes on a new personal meaning as it emerges from the story of the tormented creator’s life.
