Labelled Black

Irit Dolev & Alon Marom

Labelled Black is an immersive animated VR documentary experience that addresses universal issues such as discrimination, memory, and loss. The experience tells the story of Banchi Mashsasha, an Israeli of Ethiopian descent whose life turned upside down in 2015 after the body of her brother Yosef was found at the bottom of a deserted quarry not far from the winery where he worked. The tragedy that haunts Banchi began four months earlier on a Saturday evening when Yosef was arrested after being attacked without cause by police officers with a taser gun while sitting with a friend on a bench in a playground. The experience oscillates between the realistic and the fantastic, blending the chronicle of events that led to Yosef death with Banchi’s transformation into a prominent protest leader. It interweaves her memories, dreams, and fantasies, allowing the user to dive into her inner world, listen to her hidden thoughts, and intimately experience the pain she is coping with.
